The beach

Filed under: Uncategorized — bmc @ 8:50 pm

We spent the last week of June at the beach. I haven’t been to the North Carolina coast in the summer since 1996 or so, and I forgot how nice it is. We spent the week in a beach house on Topsail Island. Rick and Nerissa and Elijah came along.

We almost didn’t go. There’s a big forest fire in the area, and it looked like the beach was going to be smoky. We decided at the last minute to risk it, and it worked out pretty well. The wind came in from the sea pretty much every day, and we didn’t smell the smoke at all. One day, it rained, and the breeze came from the land, and the whole world smelled like a wet campfire. But it was raining, so we didn’t go outside much anyways.

The water was really warm, and the waves were pretty gentle. Abby 2.3 had no experience with the ocean, and she was a little hesitant about it, but she warmed up to it eventually. She really liked it when we dug big holes and let the waves fill them – she splashed around in them just like the puddles at home.

Here’s Abby, picking her spot for the day. I think that’s the roof of our beach house in the background – that’s how close to the beach we were.

Here I’m digging her a swimming pool.
